Practical Business Training: Wisdom They Didn't Teach You In Business School

The successful business leader is one who doesn't stop learning. You may have your degree, diploma and various certificates from business school, but every entrepreneur will tell you that what you learned inside the classroom won't be enough to prepare you from the real-life scenario and big-scale drama that building a business brings. Starting up a commercial venture, molding it to its best fighting shape, taking care for it to grow to its full potential is no textbook material-it requires a tremendous amount of physical, mental, emotional and spiritual energy.

Report: Honda N-One brochure scans reveal cute-as-a-bug city car

Honda N-One brochure scan

Honda appears to have finally put a version of its crushingly cute N Concept 4 into production. The retro-styled hatchback has shown up in Japanese dealership literature for the first time, according to CarScoop. Behold the N-One, a minicar designed to take on the Fiat 500 at its own game. The street-worthy machine ditches the LED lighting arrays of the original concept in favor of more traditional units, and designers chose to adorn the back hatch with a large chrome accent bar below the rear glass as well. We could do without that change.

Step indoors, and Honda looks to have abandoned the retro styling of the N Concept in favor of a parts-bin raid on the N Box +. The move is fitting considering both kei cars ride on the same platform. Under the hood, buyers can expect to bask in the glow of a 660-cc three-cylinder engine paired with a CVT. Power can be shuttled to either the front wheels or an all-wheel drive system depending on trim. Honda hopes the addition to the company's lineup will help boost minicar sales to 280,000 units per year. Don't expect to see this N360-influenced creation show up on our shores any time soon, however.

NASA to launch mini lab, test for cancer and disease in space

DNP Microflow

It's hard to find a good specialist on earth, let alone when you're floating 240 miles above it. That's why NASA will test the Microflow, a breadbox-sized device that instantly detects cancer and infectious diseases, and can even sense the presence of rotten food. The Canadian-made device is a "flow cytometer," which works by analyzing microparticles in blood or other fluids and replaces hospital versions weighing hundreds of pounds. Here on Earth, the device could let people in remote communities be tested more quickly for disease, or permit on-site testing of food quality, for instance. It will be particularly advantageous in space, however, where Canadian astronaut Chris Hadfield will test it during his six-month ISS mission, allowing crew to monitor, diagnose and treat themselves without outside help. Now, if we could just get it down to a hand size, and use some kind of radio waves instead -- oh wait, that's not until Stardate -105352.

Samsung unveils Galaxy Player 5.8, pockets everywhere brace for impact

Samsung unveils Galaxy Player 58, pockets everywhere brace for impact

We hope you wear baggy pants, because you're going to want big pockets to carry Samsung's giant new jukebox. The Galaxy Player 5.8 is dominated by its namesake 5.8-inch, 960 x 540 LCD -- a screen that makes the 4.8-inch AMOLED on the closely related Galaxy S III look downright modest by comparison. Android 4.0 and the latest generation of TouchWiz make their first appearances in a Samsung media player here, with the spin naturally on books and movies instead of the tasks you'd associate with a smartphone. You're otherwise looking at the kind of media player you'd expect in 2012: there's either 16GB or 32GB of built-in storage, a microSD slot, a front VGA camera for those face-to-face sessions and a huge 2,500mAh battery to compensate for the display. We're still waiting on a few details, such as the exact processor and the Galaxy Player 5.8's launch schedule, although the announcement's timing suggests we may get a peek at this behemoth when IFA 2012 kicks off later this week. In the meantime, we'd advise against buying a pair of skinny jeans.

Video: Get a heli-sweet overhead view of the 2012 Woodward Dream Cruise

Autoweek Woodward helicopter

It's practically impossible to explain the scope of the Woodward Dream Cruise that takes place every summer in Detroit to someone who's never witnessed it themselves. Here at Autoblog, we've tried using image galleries, stationary camera feeds and even a live stream attached to a Chrysler minivan in an attempt to bring Woodward coverage to the masses. Sadly, none of these efforts has proven particularly successful at conveying the actual happenings.

Watch the video down below and you'll understand why. There are miles and miles of roadway with as many as five lanes of traffic clogged with every kind of car imaginable - modern machines and classic creations on two and four wheels from American, European and Japanese manufacturers. Adding to the spectacle are a few hundred thousand spectators lining Woodward Avenue or driving their cars through the traffic. Don't forget that the Detroit Three all have some sort of official presence, too, and did we mention that it starts early in the morning and lasts until well past bedtime?

That explanation out of the way, allow us to congratulate Autoweek on its inventive idea: a radio-controlled helicopter with a professional pilot. While we still firmly believe that the Woodward Dream Cruise needs to be witnessed live for the full effect, the aerial coverage you'll see below may be the next best thing.

Apple vs Samsung verdict: Jury finds predominantly for Apple, orders Samsung to pay over $1 billion in damages

Apple vs Samsung verdict: Jury finds mostly for Apple, orders Samsung to pay over $1 billion in damages

The jury has reached a verdict in the U.S. Apple vs. Samsung trial and based on numerous reports, it looks like Apple has scored a significant victory. Both The Verge and CNET have been live-blogging the event, and in broad-strokes, it seems like none of Apple's patents were ruled invalid. Samsung was found to be infringing Apple's design and utility patents, and to have diluted Apple's trade dress. Apple was not found to be infringing any of Samsung's patents, and further found that Samsung was abusing standards-essential patents. Not all Samsung devices were found to infringe all Apple patents, but it sounds like a majority of them were.

Apple was ordered to pay Samsung absolutely no damages. Samsung was ordered to pay Apple $1.05 billion.

Reaction has been decidedly mixed. Some believe this is a victory for innovation that will force copycats to invent their own stuff. Others believe this is a defeat for innovation that will have a chilling affect on the entire industry. The truth, as always, probably lies in between.

It's important to remember a few things:

  • It'll take a while even for those well versed in trademark law to sift through the fine details and add perspective and clarity, and help form some sort of informed opinion on what this means for Apple, Samsung, and mobile going forward.
  • In the meantime, no one is going through the streets, home by home, room by room, forcibly taking or breaking anyone's existing Samsung devices. If you own a Galaxy today, you'll still own it tomorrow.
  • Apple and Samsung also remain huge manufacturing partners, and both have new products in their pipelines.
  • This isn't over.

What difference, if any, this verdict will make in the market, now and into the future, is harder to predict, and a lot of questions remain. If this was a "pay your fine, go about your business" type of decision, then Samsung is already fielding new devices and while this might sting -- a lot -- long term damage probably won't be severe. If this was "change your business and now", and the infringement was found to be ongoing, then Samsung might be in a lot more trouble.

Also, what this means for Apple's current and potentially future cases against Motorola (now owned by Google), and HTC remains to be seen.

There's an enormous amount of information to digest, so we'll take the time to digest it. For now, to put it in cheap TV election coverage terms, however, we've just seen Apple paint the board aluminium. On the one year anniversary of Tim Cook becoming CEO of Apple, he has perhaps just overseen the biggest legal victory in their corporate history. And the legal ramifications, the distinctions between degrees of copying, will no doubt be felt for years to come.

What's your take? Is this a victory for Apple and for innovation? A travesty of justice? Something in between?

Results still soaring at city's private schools

THERE was no sign of GCSE performance dipping at Bristol's independent schools.

As the proportion of GCSEs scoring a C or above fell for the first time in the exam's 24-year history at a national level, private schools in the city continued to see results soar.

At Redland High School for Girls, there was plenty to celebrate as 100 per cent of the students achieved five A* – C grades including maths and English.

Six girls excelled with 11 or more A* grades including Rachel Brierley-Ambrose, right, Maya Concannon, Gloria Lau, below, Madeleine Tickell, Rachel Gaitonde and Madeleine Taylor-Laidler.

The school's head mistress Caroline Bateson said: "Following our A-level results last week when our students achieved 100 per cent pass rate with 30 per cent of students achieving three A*/A grades we can now celebrate these fantastic GCSE results."

Four GCSE candidates at Colston's School in Stapleton pulled off an impressive clean sweep of ten A* grades.

The school's head master Peter Fraser said: "It is exciting to see this level of performance by these most able candidates. What they have gained is well deserved."

At Badminton School in Westbury-on-Trym, 18 of the 48 girls sitting GCSEs achieved all A or A* grades. In total, 47 per cent of all grades were A* and 79 per cent were either A* or A. For many subjects, the school opted to follow the challenging international GCSE (iGCSE) courses.

The school's head mistress Rebecca Tear said: "This is a wonderful achievement for both girls and staff, and is testimony to their hard work and commitment."

Students at The Red Maids' School in Westbury-on-Trym achieved the best ever GCSE results in the school's 378-year history, including 323 A*s, which was a record 43 per cent of all grades.

Isabel Tobias, the school's head mistress, said: "This year's GCSE students have brought to life the Red Maids' values and their achievements should be recognised all the more because of the additional activities that they've take on."

Bristol Grammar School students also achieved the best GCSE results in the school's history.

While 100 per cent of students achieved at least five A*-C grades including English and maths, 80 per cent of all the grades achieved were either A* or A.

The school's head master Roderick MacKinnon said: "Although we're used to seeing our students excel year by year, there is no doubt that this year's GCSE results are exceptional and I am obviously delighted for the children but also extremely proud of my staff."

Some 57 per cent of entries at Clifton High School achieved grade A* or A, more than 78 per cent were marked A*, A or B and more than 92 per cent reached C or above.

Boys at Queen Elizabeth's Hospital in Clifton achieved excellent GCSE level results this year, with 90 per cent of all GCSE grades at A* to B.

Clifton College also posted another impressive set of GCSE results. Six pupils achieved 11 A* grades, including four girls Mabel Moll, Florence Moore, Lizzie Powell and Emily Wright, and two boys, John Maguire and Daniel Baryshnikov.
