Traditionally, the black robe is worn every time they take their position on the bench. This tradition is said to have come from the 14th century in England. In 1694, the funeral of Queen Mary was attended by all the judges around the world. In the funeral, all the judges wore black to signify their mourning for the loss of Queen Mary.
